Upken content policy
Version 1.0, in force from 27 October 2026.
The short version
- Everything in Upken is published by Upken. There are no posts or comments from other users.
- Our ideas are our own writing, inspired by the books we credit. They are not the books, not summaries of them, and not approved by their authors or publishers.
- If you think something in Upken is wrong, harmful or infringes your rights, tell us in the app or at [email protected].
- If you send us a credible complaint that something in Upken infringes your rights (for example in a book or picture you own), or a credible report that something in Upken is unlawful, we take the content down within 24 hours while we look into it.
1. What Upken publishes
Upken turns great non-fiction books into short illustrated ideas you read in order. For each book we publish:
- Ideas: up to 8 per book (a book that is out of copyright may be split into Parts, each with up to 8 ideas), each about 5 short pages and about 3 to 4 minutes to read, one paragraph per page, with a picture on every page;
- a conclusion card at the end of each idea (a question on the front, the answer on the back);
- a short teaser for each idea, for the Ideas feed;
- a book conclusion: a short card with no picture that sums up what to remember and do, through Upken's own ideas from the book; never a summary of the book's text or its chapters;
- a cover and a small symbol for the book, both designed by Upken;
- narration: an AI voice reads every page aloud, and the app says "Narration is AI-generated";
- a credit line on the book page and the book conclusion: "Ideas inspired by Title* by Author (Publisher, Year). Upken is not affiliated with the author or publisher.", with a link to buy or borrow the book.
Share pictures made in the app carry Upken's logo and the book's symbol, never the book's title, author or publisher. The app itself always credits the book.
Upken does not publish anything written by its users. There are no posts, comments, reviews or user-made ideas, and there never will be user-published ideas. Like counts are public numbers, but nobody can see who liked what. The only text people choose that others may see is their username: on an Aura card or rank card they share, and from a later version on the leaderboard. Usernames have rules: see our terms of use, section 3.
2. How we write
These rules protect authors, publishers and you. The founder checks every idea against them.
- Our own words and our own order. Each idea explains what a book teaches in Upken's own words, with Upken's own examples (invented everyday scenes, or facts from independent sources). We never follow the book's chapter order, never use the author's stories, case studies or metaphors, and never build ideas on the author's named framework.
- Not a replacement for the book. We publish at most 8 ideas from a book unless the publisher has licensed more. A reader who has read all our ideas should still want to read the book.
- Credit. We name the person behind a distinctive idea or term the first time we use it, and every book is credited.
- No quotations from books that are still in copyright. We explain their ideas in our own words instead. From books that are out of copyright (see the last point below), a quotation is rare: at most one per idea, at most 40 words, word for word, always with the author, the work and the year. We never quote song lyrics or poems, and never put quotations in teasers, notifications or ads.
- Facts are checked. Every factual claim has a source. We keep a page reference for each one, so we can answer questions about it quickly.
- Our values. Our examples never rely on interest-based money, gambling or games of chance, or alcohol.
- AI helps, a person decides. AI tools help draft some of the writing. The founder writes or rewrites, checks and approves every idea, and Upken takes editorial responsibility for it.
- Books out of copyright count as out of copyright only if they are in the public domain in both the UK and the USA, including the translation and edition we use.
3. Pictures and covers
- Every picture is original Upken artwork, made in one consistent Upken style. AI image tools may be used, on a plan whose terms allow commercial use, and the founder reviews and approves every picture. We record how each picture was made.
- We never use publisher covers, author photos, photos or scans of book pages, or charts copied from a book. Charts are drawn by us from the original data source, which we cite.
- Our art is respectful and modest: people are modestly dressed, and there is no alcohol, gambling or imagery that could be read as occult.
4. Accuracy and advice
- Upken is for general education and interest. Ideas about health, money or the law are general information only, never personal advice, and cite reputable sources. When the evidence is mixed, we say so.
- We avoid politics and culture-war topics, and we do not shame groups or people.
- Some books end with a short note on where the book is disputed.
- Mistakes can still happen. If you find one, please tell us (section 5), and we will correct it.
5. How to report a problem
In the app:
- in an idea, use "Report a problem / send feedback";
- in the Ideas feed, press and hold a teaser and choose "Report a problem";
- or go to Settings > Help > Report a problem.
A report about a whole book is sent by email.
By email: [email protected]. Please tell us:
- which book and idea (the title, a share link or a screenshot);
- what the problem is.
What happens next: we read every report. If an idea is wrong, we correct it. If you send a credible report that content is unlawful (for example that it defames someone), we take it down within 24 hours while we look into it, with the same steps and times as a rights complaint (section 6). If content is seriously harmful in another way, we remove it while we look into it.
Questions about your personal data are handled under our privacy notice (upken.app/privacy), which has its own legal time limits.
6. Our 24-hour takedown promise
This promise covers two kinds of complaint:
- rights complaints: you own the rights to a book, a picture or other material, or act for someone who does, and you believe Upken uses it without permission;
- reports of unlawful content: you believe something in Upken is unlawful for another reason, for example because it defames someone.
Write to [email protected].
Please include:
- your name and contact details, and, for a rights complaint, whether you are the rights holder or act for one;
- the work you believe is infringed, or why you believe the content is unlawful;
- the Upken content concerned (the idea's title, a share link or a screenshot);
- what you would like us to do (for example remove it, correct it or a credit, or discuss a licence).
What we do:
| Step | What happens | When |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Log | We record your complaint. | The same day |
| 2. Acknowledge | We confirm we have it and that the content is under review. | Within 2 working days |
| 3. Take down | Unless the complaint is clearly unfounded, we unpublish the content: it disappears from the feeds, the Today page, search and the book page, and shared links to it no longer open it; its narration is no longer served; and copies downloaded for offline reading or listening are removed from people's phones the next time the app connects. | Within 24 hours of a credible complaint |
| 4. Investigate | We check our records for the content: its sources, our notes and how it was written. We take legal advice if needed. | Within 14 days |
| 5. Decide and reply | We tell you in writing what we decided: remove it for good (and fix anything similar), correct it (for example the credit or the wording) and put it back, put it back with an explanation if the complaint was unfounded, or offer to discuss a licence. | After step 4 |
We never argue or threaten, and we keep a record of every complaint and our replies for 6 years.
7. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Upken grows, and will change the version and date at the top.
